Autumn 1
In English this term, we are using the story ‘Journey to the Centre of the Earth’ written by Sarah Courtauld, based on the story by Jules Verne. Intrepid explorer Professor Liedenbrock leads a dramatic expedition to an Icelandic volcano, where a secret tunnel leads to the very centre of the earth. But will they be successful? The story will be used to help develop our grammar skills, when focusing on expanded noun phrases, inverted commas and manipulating subordinate clauses. We will use these grammar focuses to plan and write our own version of the story. Then we will switch to our Faction unit, where will look to write diary entries from the point of view of the young, intellectual but hesitant nephew Axel.
In maths we shall consolidate our place value skills, focusing on Roman Numerals, partitioning, comparing and ordering and rounding. Later in the term, we shall switch to addition and subtraction looking at written methods and using the inverse to check answers.
In science, we are looking at the living things and their habitats. We shall be looking at how flowers reproduce and the look at the life cycle of mammals, amphibians and insects.
Please have a look at the Knowledge Organisers in the Curriculum Documents tab above to find out more about our learning this term.
