Welcome to Reception

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS), covers the first years of your child's development, from birth to the end of their first year in school. The emphasis is on learning through play, in a safe and secure environment.

We have three classes in Reception: Bumblebees, Dragonflies and Butterflies. The teachers work together to plan and offer interesting and fun activities for the children. Every child is given the support and opportunity to learn and develop at their own pace.

Reception children are very much a part of our school community. They take part in school assemblies, concerts and fun days. Through the curriculum they learn to work together, share ideas, equipment and to build good relationships with other children and adults.

In Reception, there are three classes and they are:

  • Bumblebee Class - Miss Day (EYFS Lead)
  • Butterfly Class - Mrs Armeni

The EYFS Lead is Miss Day (Bumblebee Class).

If you would like to discuss your child, please speak to your child's class teacher.

Thank you!

Phonics and Reading

In our Phonics, we use Twinkl Phonics to deliver high quality Phonics lessons. Each lesson follows a key process to ensure children are successful in their learning. The lesson begins with a revision session (to revise pervious learning) and then new learning is introduced. The children are then given opportunities to read and write words linked to the new learning and then read a sentence where this learning is applied. Throughout the day, they are then provided with opportunities in all areas to 'bump' into their learning. This includes opportunities in Guided Reading, Provision and Adult Led Activities.

In our Reading, we currently use a reading scheme called Pearson Bug Club. The scheme has a comprehensive collection of high quality reading books for the children to use in school. We use these texts as a basis for our learning and complete a mixture of Whole Class Reading and Reading Carousal activities. Also, we ensure the children cover texts such as: fiction, non-fiction, plays and poetry. This is to develop children's comprehension skills and enable them to become life long readers.

Useful Resources

In Reception, the children will explore Level 2 - 4 in Twinkl Phonics. They will also be given opportunities to explore Level 1 and develop their phonemic awareness. Below, there are resources which you can use at home to support your child's reading development.

Reading Information

This is an information booklet linked to the KS1 Reading Skill Vipers. These are the types of questions which your child will be asked during their reading. We have provided it here for you to use at home as well. Not all of them are used in EYFS and if you do use them at home you may want to focus on Retrieval and Explaining. If you have any questions or queries about this, please email your class teacher - thank you!

Rhino Readers

As part of our Twinkl Phonics provision, your child will also receive a digital book each week. This will be a Rhino Reader book and this will directly link to the sounds they have learnt in the week. You will receive a sticker with an access code on it. If you are having issues accessing the book, please speak with your child's teacher - thank you.

Bug Club

At Clarendon Infants School, we are incredibly passionate about developing children’s love of reading. One of our aims at our school, is to encourage children to read different texts at home.

We have access to a resource called Bug Club which has a range of fantastic texts to read at home. It has an online library which every child can access at home and every child has a log in for this in their reading record.

The scheme has a comprehensive collection of high quality reading books for the children to use in school. You may have used this reading resource during online learning and are aware that it has lots of books which you can read at home. It also has questions and online activities which your child can access linked to the books.

In your child’s reading record, there is a login in and password so your child can access this resource at home. You will need the schools code to log in and this code is: 7cqr

The website is: www.activelearnprimary.co.uk. If you have any issues with your child’s login and/or password, please speak to your child’s teacher or look on the school’s website for more information – thank you!

How do I use Bug Club?

Once you have logged on, you will be welcomed onto your child’s home page. In this section, there is a tab called ‘My Stuff’. When you click on ‘My Stuff’, it will bring up a selection of books your child can read which are linked to their reading ability. Your child can then choose a book they would like to read.

Your child can then choose a book they would like to read. As they read through the book, there will be little ‘bugs’ on some pages. These bugs are interactive and you are able to click on these. They will then take your child to an activity which is linked to the book. This activity is a fantastic way to check their understanding of the text. Once your child has finished reading all the books on there, speak to your child’s teacher and they can put more books on there for you.

Each term, there is a Curriculum Overview explaining the different areas your child will be exploring throughout the term.
